America.gov AI Search: What It Does
America.gov uses AI-enhanced search to help people find federal information through ordinary-language questions. GSA says the system combines AI technology with information from more than 29,000 government websites. The design is intended to reduce the need to know an agency name before beginning a government-service search.
From agency-first to need-first search
Traditional federal navigation often starts with an organization: Department of State, Social Security Administration, Veterans Affairs or another agency. A person who does not know the correct agency can waste time choosing among sites. America.gov changes the starting point by allowing the user to describe the need.
What happens after the answer
The answer is most useful when it identifies the relevant program and source. If the question involves a passport, for example, the State Department remains the important authority for current requirements. If the question involves Social Security, the Social Security Administration remains the relevant program source.
AI does not replace federal rules
Government rules can contain exceptions, definitions and deadlines. A short generated response cannot safely be treated as a substitute for the full source. Use America.gov AI to locate the information and then open the cited or underlying government page.
